With the announced closure of the Divx site Stage 6 what comes next for what is possibly the best video format so far introduced for the internet?
The management of Divx have stated in their post that the main problem has been with the cost of running the site due to the bandwidth usage. That they had investigated multiple options to keep Stage6 up and running but found none to be feasible.
However, rumours have surfaced that one reason why Stage 6 hasn't been converted into an independent enterprise is that the board couldn't decide on how the new entity would be divided.
It is a shame that we are losing this excellent service. Stage6 is easily one of the most accessible ways for independent film makers to have their work distributed to a massive potential audience. The other services that exist Youtube, Google Video etc just do not come close to the quality of the Divx format.
What next for divx and the Stage 6 users?
Will the Divx format go the way of betamax, v2000 and more recently HD DVD?
